It's Not A Porch (The Stoop Stoop Song)
2002-09-18

recently, i've become quite fascinated with the phenomenon of stoop-sitting. stoop, from the dutch stoep, used to reach the raised main floor of houses in areas prone to flooding in the netherlands. strange that in a city where one can experience the whole world, oftentimes, one's whole world extends not much farther than the steps outside your house. though i have been unable to find any definitive explanation for this practice, i did find this little ditty about it.

Down in front of Casey's
Old brown wooden stoop
On a summer's evening
We formed a merry group

Boys and girls together
We would dance and waltz
While 'ginny' played the organ
On the sidewalks of New York.

"The Sidewalks of New York," lyrics and song by Charles B. Lawlor and James W. Blake, 1894
