regarding my obsession with the former soviet central asian republics, i'm not sure where it started, probably in a soviet politics class in college, during the disintegration of the state, and our professor coming in weekly and telling us, "remember that lecture last week about x, throw away your notes, now it's y".
i predicted in 1992 that this corner of the world would become the next hotspot, what with the gas and oil and proximity to china and russia, and the resurgance of religion after almost a century of enforced atheism, and the fragility of imperial boundaries that make no sense in terms of geography or ethnicity, outside of bureaucratic efficiences. sort of like, borders wars and such all over africa since 1960 and independence.
or it could just be that it looked hot in that james bond movie with maryam d'abo (you know the sister of the chick who played the older sister on the wonder years) as the eastern block cellist in danger. oh, and they all end in -stan. what's not to like about that?
