It's Gonna Be Me

in order to keep the ol' cerebrum off the less pleasant bits of life, often you will find some serious cheese in my discman. light, fluffy pop fun. music that doesn't have to mean anything which is good, cause it doesn't. to wit, recently, i scrounged up disc one of NOW 47, featuring some of the best of british pop music from about 18 months ago. i'm sure you've seen the ads for NOW compilations on the tee-vee, but the american version pales in comparison to the venerable english one, which stretches back to the early 80's. one of my fondest college memories was hanging with a close friend who had gone to "high school" in england and listening to her copy of NOW 4 on vinyl. i'm fairly certain it involved "chain reaction" by uber-diva diana ross. oh , those WERE the days.

but back to the present. britney is there, with ronan keating and robbie williams. there is some spice girls (that last-ditch stab at hip-pop) alongside leann rimes, s club 7, and anastacia. actually, i realized today that her "i'm outta love" is the perfect slice of aural delight to strut, i mean strut, through the hood. but what i've been stuck on are track 7 and 8, david gray's 'babylon" and all saint's "pure shores". a double-shot that hits me right where i live these days, the first looking backward, while the second peers forward. in fact, you might say that my life exists in those few moments of silence between those tracks, no longer dwelling in the past , but not yet facing the future. again with the cusps.

take me to my beach.
