The Gates
2005-02-14

ok, so i guess i'll weigh in on christo's recent extravaganza master work, those central park gates. took a stroll in the park yesterday afternoon. beautiful day for it, i might add. sunny and brisk. in the lovely company of one of my oldest friends who trained it down from new haven for the day.

first, wow, was the park a mob scene. used to crowds in new york, but this was epic. second, it's cool. i know, that isn't a very sophisticated word to use as art criticism but there you go. the scale and the ubiquity. but beyond that, it didn't really do anything for me. i think that if those safrron-colored (who comes up with these color names, i wish i had that job) sheets had been connected to one another from base to base, creating continuous canopies throughout the park, i might have really been into it. the one thing that i did notice was how demarcating the paths throughout the park "forced" people onto them. on a normal day in central park, people are all over. but not yesterday, foot traffic flowed heavily and stop and go down the paths under the gates. it was almost eerie.

on a slightly different note, remember, boys and girls, ladies and gentlemen, every day is valentine's day.
