Homo. Hetero. Metro?

last night, i saw a television advertisement for maxim hair color. i knew this product existed as i had seen a print ad above a urinal in the bathroom of a downtown diner last week. i was shocked and amused by the content of this ad, featuring hot, busty, lusty babes crawling all up on pretty boys with frosted tips. now, i've always believed that coloring your hair was akin to throwing the closet door open for all to see, unless of course you go jet black (goth) or a primary color (punk). how wrong was i.

want proof? read this, one scintillating take on the New sexuality by Mark Simpson, uk gadfly and author of "anti-gay", a controversial collection of essays about gay culture and identity that i have been dying to read for quite some time. pay attention, lads. narcissism ain't just for fags anymore.

"metrosexuality" was the name of a television series that aired on britain's channel 4 last year that has been described as "queer as folk meets ab fab". honestly, i'm not sure if this is a good or a bad thing, though the fact that the show centered on the lives and loves of a black gay man and his straight son seems like a step in the right direction. what this has to do with simpson's take on the term is anybody's guess.

but all this reminded me of the chapter in susan faludi's "stiffed" focusing primarily on the "heterosexualization" of details magazine in the early to mid-90's. ah, details. remember when that glad rag would feature pics of rupaul before her mac contract and wig budget from tommy boy records? blonde crimped mane and streaks of blue, pink and red up those fabulous cheek bones. but that is neither here nor there. it's hard to tell the difference between genre and maxim, out and fhm, these days. i suppose the sure-fire way to get pussy out there is to look like you crave cock. who knew?
